When you’re building a brand as an individual creative, you have the freedom to build it however you like! And the best way for you to do that is to build a brand that you love and want to share with the world.
There’s no point building a brand that you don’t love to share. If you aren’t sharing your brand, then you aren’t giving your audience all the goodness that you have or getting them on board with what you have to offer.
The more that you love your brand, the more you’ll feel confident and proud to share it. The more that you share it, the more your audience will love it too. Your audience can feel the energy that you bring to your brand, so when you’re bringing those positive, excited, energetic vibes to the table, then - you guessed it - your audience will feel that too.
As independent creatives, being able to build a personal brand that gives you energy and makes you want to shout about it from the rooftops is the ultimate goal. So how do we do that?
Here are some questions that I always ask my strategy clients at the very beginning:
Asking these types of questions is going to help you to build a brand and business that you love, because you’re designing it around the things that you love - not the things you think you should do or would make other people happy.
For example, I’ve built a brand around the colour orange because it’s my freakin favourite, it makes me feel sunshiney and happy. I love to dance, make dorky dad jokes and to shake my booty on Instagram Reels, because these are the things that light me up. The more that I share that, the more my clients get to know me and feel like they want to spend time with me as their coach.
Sometimes asking yourself these questions can change your whole brand and business - and that’s a good thing. You might realise that you’re offering services or products that you don’t actually love.
As a creative, you have the opportunity, initiative and creativity to be able to build a brand around whatever it is that you love, that lights you up, and that makes your dream day a reality.
So ask yourself - what do you love?
The impact that you have is what’s going to give you satisfaction in your life, your business and your brand. If your brand has a purpose, you’re going to feel really good about what it is that you’re doing.
Your audience is going to feel good about it too, because they can see that you’ve got a reason for doing what you’re doing - and it’s not just to make money out of them.
Here are some really powerful questions you can ask yourself to understand the impact that you want to have:
Getting clear on the impact you want to have has a lot to do with your vision and mission. The clearer that you are on that, the more purposeful you’ll feel every time you show up.
Asking these questions has really helped me to figure out my vision and the impact I wanted to have on the world. I want to make the world a more creative place one brand at a time, so that ultimately the world can be a more creative place. Creativity starts conversations, helps people to feel seen and heard, and so many more beautiful things. Understanding the impact that I want to have means that I know why I’m doing what I’m doing and to feel really good about it.
It’s easy to overcomplicate what we’re doing, the brand we’re building and the business we’re growing.
To simplify it, ask yourself these questions:
Think about how you can build your brand around leaning into your strengths rather than fighting against your weaknesses. Not only will it feel so much easier, you’ll also feel good about doing what you're good at!
To help you with this, you can also take a strengths test. I took the Gallup Strengths Assessment to understand what my strengths are and what I love doing, which led to me completely shifting my brand and my business. I highly recommend it - it’s another thing that can change your business a lot for a good reason!
When you follow these 3 steps, you’re going to build a brand that you are so proud of, so excited to share and grow, and that feels so good for you and your audience.
Have fun designing and building your feel-good brand, I can’t wait for you to be so excited to wake up every day and share it with the world!
